Jivamukti Yoga is a fairly young yoga style with roots in Ashtanga Yoga. The style was developed in the eighties by David Life and Sharon Gannon. Like Ashtanga is Jivamukti a powerful physical style of vinyasa-based yoga. It has also a particular focus on the ethical and spiritual aspects of yoga practice; especially the practice of the five central components: Shastra (scripture), Bhakti (devotion), Ahimsa (nonviolence), Nada (music), and Dhyana (meditation). Animal rights, veganism, environmentalism and social activism are important themes in the practice.
