First use
A cork yoga mat is a smart and sustainable choice. Thanks to its natural texture, cork immediately provides a good grip – which even improves if your hands are slightly damp. So you don’t have to do anything before you start: just roll it out and get started.
Smell
Many cork mats have a natural rubber underlay. When unpacking, you may notice a slight rubber smell. Let your mat air out for a while and the smell will gradually disappear.
Maintenance
Cork is naturally antibacterial, dirt-repellent and anti-fungal, making it easy to maintain as long as you wipe the mat down regularly.
Cork is strong but sensitive to excessive moisture, so keep the cleaning ritual simple and as dry as possible.
How to clean a cork yoga mat
- Clean the top layer with a slightly damp cloth
- If necessary, use a (very) small amount of natural vinegar or mild, natural soap
- Allow the mat to dry completely before rolling it up again
- No washing machine – this will damage the material
- Do not soak, over-wet or scrub
- Avoid yoga mat sprays and cleaners containing alcohol, oil or chemicals
- Do not expose to heat for long periods (e.g. direct sunlight or near a heater)
- Store in a cool, dry place – rolled up or flat.
