Do you want to buy a new yoga mat? Pay attention, among other things, to the thickness and weight of the mat, because that can vary considerably. In many cases a basic yoga mat offers an ideal balance between thickness, weight and affordability.
The thickness of your yoga mat has nothing to do with how good your yoga is or how long you practice yoga, but with the style of yoga that you practice, the floor on which you practice and your personal preference.
A standard yoga mat is usually 4 or 4.5 mm thick, this is the most common thickness of a yoga mat. This size is thick enough not to feel the cold of the ground (we just can't all practice yoga in the warmth of Bali) and thick enough not to bother your knees during low lunge yoga poses (Anjaneyasana).
This basic yoga mat of 4 mm or 4.5 mm is also just the right thickness to keep your balance and to stay grounded with sufficient insulation and damping.
A basic yoga mat is lightweight and therefore handy to carry. Of course you prefer not to walk around or cycle with an overweight yoga mat, to arrive at your yoga class completely sweaty and frustrated.
The Love Yoga mat from Love Generation for example is only 1100 grams, and you also get a free lanyard with it. Handy to take over your shoulder, and also to store at home; you hang it on the rack when you get home. The nice thing about these Love mats is that they are easy to travel with: you fold them twice and then they fit on the bottom of every medium sized suitcase :-).
Or do you want to know more about the material of a yoga mat? The most popular materials at the moment are TPE, PCV and eco-rubber.
Finally, we would especially recommend that you choose a yoga mat that you like! Our experience is that a beautiful mat works super well for your motivation. Moreover, many of the 4 mm yoga mats have nice prints!
