First use
A PU (polyurethane) yoga mat is known for its excellent grip – even when your hands or feet are damp. The surface feels grippy and dry, exactly as it should. You don't have to do anything before you start: simply roll it out and begin your practice.
Scent
The PU layer itself has hardly any smell. The rubber underlay naturally has a fairly distinct odor. Do you find that unpleasant? Don't worry – with a little patience, it can be easily resolved:
- Let your mat air out unrolled for a few days.
- Use your mat regularly to make the odor disappear faster.
After a few weeks, the smell will have largely diminished.
Maintenance
- Rubber is a biodegradable material. As a result, it is somewhat more sensitive to the elements. Therefore, ensure that you do not expose your mat to heat or excessive moisture for extended periods.
- Color changes are normal. You slow down this process by regularly cleaning the mat lightly with a damp cloth and protecting it from direct sunlight.
Cleaning a PU & Rubber yoga mat
-
- Clean with a slightly damp soft cloth or sponge – do not scrub
- Do not use alcohol-based sprays, soaps, oils, or cleaning products
- Make sure the mat does not get soaking wet.
- Let it dry thoroughly before rolling up and storing the mat.
- No washing machine or vacuum cleaner – that can damage your mat
- Do not expose to direct sunlight or heat sources (e.g. in a hot car or near a heater)
- Store in a dark, cool place
