Tingshas are small Tibetan cymbals used for meditation, spiritual rituals, and cleansing spaces.
Tingshas for meditation and rituals
Tingshas (also known as ding-shas) consist of two metal discs connected to each other. When you strike them against each other, you hear a clear, high-pitched sound that resonates for a long time.
Traditionally, tingshas are used as musical offerings, for example during pujas and other spiritual rituals. Nowadays, many people also use them during meditation or to consciously mark a moment.
You can use a tingsha, for example:
-
at the beginning or end of a meditation
-
to focus attention during meditation
-
during spiritual rituals
-
for cleaning a room
-
in feng shui
-
in sound therapy and healing
Tingshas and feng shui
In feng shui, tingshas are used to restore the flow of energy in a space. By sounding them in the different corners of a room, you 'cleanse' the space with sound, as it were. This can be an alternative to cleansing with, for example, smudging.
Tingshas and sound
The clear sound of a tingsha helps to open or close a meditation and bring your attention back to the present moment. Additionally, tingshas are also used in sound therapy and healing.
Ohm and lotus
The tingshas are decorated at the top with the Ohm symbol and the lotus. In various Indian spiritual traditions, Ohm represents the universal sound. The lotus is often seen as a symbol of transformation.
Material
Each tingsha is cast individually from a metal alloy. This version is made of brass, an alloy consisting primarily of copper and zinc.
